The existing two-way path between Sweden and Spain in the field of architecture is perhaps less known than the cultural, historical, political and gastronomic ties. On the one hand, in the collections of the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts there are numerous examples of the influence of Spanish architecture in Sweden from the late 19th century onwards, the so-called “The Spanish Wave”. During this time, a number of prestigious buildings in Stockholm were designed to imitate the style of late medieval and Renaissance architecture in Spain. Among them are the Hallwyl Palace (1898) by architect Isak Gustaf Clason and the Davidson House (1896) by architects Agi Lindegren and Gustaf Lindgren. On the other hand, the influence of 20th-century Nordic architecture in Madrid is patent and will be presented through a single case study: the House of Sweden. It is a little-known building from the 1950s, which, by means of successive renovations, has been distorted from its original essence: a modern Nordic building in the heart of Madrid. The duality between its exterior and its interior shows wisdom in knowing how to interweave influences.
Svante Helmbaek Tirén is a Stockholm-based curator and writer and the head of collections of the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts. He specializes in architectural history and the history of decorative arts.
Ismael Amarouch García is a Spanish architect with a MA and PhD in Advanced Architectural Design from the Higher Technical School of Architecture of Madrid. He is currently a full-time lecturer & researcher at the School of Architecture and Design, Finis Terrae University, Santiago de Chile.
The talk starts at kl 18:00 in the library at Konstakademien. Drinks from 17.30. The event is free, but has a limited capacity of 50 people. Notify your interest in advance to emb.estocolmo.sec@maec.es
