Inhabited Edge – Marcus Donaghy and Will Dimond
“We read the envelope of building not as thin line but as expanded field of nested microclimates, each element sheltering, exposing or connecting another – from garden to hearth, school gate to treetop classroom; the built fabric as inhabited edge linking rooms with streets/gardens, enfolding life within its depth; a process equally concerned with the landscape, inherited, borrowed, constructed, re-seeded and how this can situate/anchor the proposal in space and time.”
An environmental practice informed by inherited knowledge and their own emerging understanding of the haptic relation to material and atmospheric conditions, the quest not solely concrete but testing how material qualities absorb light, gather heat, reflect sound and season the air in which we dwell. Each space and its atmosphere emerge over time in reciprocal relation to the way material weathers, is worn, and ultimately is replaced or renewed, regrafted. Donaghy&Dimond attempt to assemble these materials in ways that allow for time and life to interact, and for cycles of use and reuse, decay and regrowth, digging down into the light.
